Transcription Guides

Here you will learn about how to transcribe old handwriting, a skill called palaeography. Reading handwriting from the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries can be fun, but does require some work to learn forms and styles of handwriting. In some cases the handwriting can be quite easy to read but other times it requires a lot of care and attention to detail to understand what has actually been written.

This section gives you access to everything you'll need as a transcriber- from understanding the basics to more complex, technical issues.

If you have any questions have a look at our FAQs which answer some of our more common queries. You could also have a look in our forums which will be of use to you in your work - they will provide support from the transcribing community which are all involved in this ground breaking project. Finally you can always contact us with any queries.
