013 A small village consisting of a row of dwelling houses on both sides of the Public road Leading from Dalkeith to Path-head, In all there are about thirty dwelling houses chiefly one story high, and two of them are Public houses for retail of Spirituous Liquors. these three small Grocers Shops and an Infant School, the inhabitants are Tradesmen, Colliers and agricultural Labourers. Chiefly The Houses are all in good repair having each a small garden attached to it. They are the property of the Earl of Stair.

013 A small stone building in good repair and built in 1851 by or at the expense of the present Earl of Stair there is an appointed Teacher, or School Mrs [Master] to it a salary of £35 per Ann. [Annum], besides scholars fees. The salary is paid by the Earl of Stair. The branches taught are English arithmetic, sowing knitting etc.
