006 | A handsome old mansion house, built on the site of the ancient Chapel of St Catherines, about 3 miles South of Edinburgh on the Peebles Road, the property and residence of James Stewart Esqr. It has two principal fronts that to the West and South. the latter 3 storys high with two side wings 1 story high, and built in a plain style. ornamented on top with a palisade, though ancient the style; still latterly it has been greatly modernized by successive additions of buildings: The pleasure grounds are small and neat, with an excellent culinary garden a short distance S. [South] East; to the North of which are attached the offices in bad repair, indeed since the Property was sold by the former proprietor Sir William Rae there has been a great laxity in keeping the grounds in good condition. it has always been a place of note from its having the famous well situate near it called the oily or Balm Well |
