[Situation] On the E. [East] side of the River Esk opposie Fisherrow.
A considerably important town [an] ancient burgh of regality, and a parliamentary burgh, in the [Parish] of Inveresk, Edinburghshire. [It's] name is said to be taken from "mussel bank" Situated at the mouth of the River Esk but its ancient name was "Esk- muthe". It [consists] of a high street running 650 yards north-eastwards from the end of the end of the New bridge; a Street called Mill Hill running 450 yards North-Eastward from the end of the Timber Bridge to the Links, a spacious but Short thoroughfare running Southward from the end of the Timber Bridge to the High [Street] another spacious thoroughfare communicating between the High Street and Newbigging, and various la[nes] and alleys running parallel with these last thoroughfares. The town has a large proportion of self contained houses, many of them in the Villa Style. On the opposite or left bank of the Esk stands the populous and thriving Village of Fisherrow, which, with the suburb of Newbigging is within the regality of Musselburgh. Musselburgh is governed by a council of 12 and unites w[ith] Leith and Portobello in sending a member to Parliament.
