A small town in the parish of Inveresk situated on the western bank of the River Esk, opposite the town of Musselburgh, of which it forms a suburb. It consists of one principal thoroughfare called a High Street, some subordinate streets parallel to it and several cross streets [and] alleys, and attached clusters of houses. It is - as its name imports - a fishing town, and is inhabited almost wholly by Fishermen and others engaged in a seafaring life. At the west end of the town is a small harbour and modernly erected stone pier which are frequently visited by vessels for the landing of [tim]ber and other goods for the purpose of evading payment of the heavy harbour dues of Leith. A railway [runs] down upon the town from the west and cuts of for some distance a small wing & upon the north. [It] is within the Parliamentary borough of Musselburgh and is governed by the corporation of that town. In [con]sequence of its being virtually a portion of Musselburgh, it looks chiefly to the west side of the esk for its places of worship, yet it possesses, within its own bounds, two chapels situated respectively in a lane leading [ ]thward from the high street, and in the diverging thoroughfare from that street toward the New Bridge. Population in 1831, including Musselburgh and Newbigging 7024.
