104 A flat potion of land, now partly arable, but originally a lake, situated a short distance north-west of the Cathedral. It is still known in the island as "The Abbot's fish pond". "Adjoining the gardens of the Abbey and surrounded by little hillocks, extends a morass, the remnant of an artificial lake of several acres, anciently traversed through the middle by a broad green terrace, and fringed round the edge with agreeable walks". 104 This "broad green terrace" still remains as a substantial old road through the site of the pond, and though it cannot be traced through the rough ground westward, it is traditionally supposed to have led to a small temple farther inland called Tigh nan Cùildich.
