036 ; 037 ; 045 ; 046 | Contd [Continued] Parish of Meldrum of about 200 acres of wood and a few acres of heath, the remaining portion of the parish is under cultivation. The general geological formation of the parish is Hornblende rock, which is to be met with in gigantic masses : the quality of this rock is so fine, that with a little labor it can take on a polish equal to marble; whinstone and limestone abound in the parish and on the Estate of Bethelnie rock-crystal is to be found. There are no hills of consequence in the parish; but the surface is very ridgy and undulating. The views from certain parts of the parish are very extensive, extending westwards to the well known "Tap O' Noth," and to the lofty Bennochie, as also to the district of Formartine. There have been several stone cists. Urns & flint arrow heads discovered at various times when tilling the ground. There can still be tracked the remains of a Roman camp on the Estate of Bethelnie. This parish contains the Town of Old Meldrum which was erected into a Burgh of Barony in 1672. The Imperial Gazetteer of Scotland (Fullarton's) at page 409. says, "A post town, a market town & a burgh of barony in the parish of Meldrum, Aberdeenshire.
