FOOTDEE | Footdee Square Footdee Square Footdee Square Fishers Square |
Mr. Alexander Gould Pilot Master Mr. William Smith Pilot Mr. John Davidson Pilot . |
075 | This is sometimes called Fish Town of Futtie, Fishers Square, and Footdee Square the latter appears to be the correct name. These houses were erected by the Corporation in the beginning of the present century, and are arranged in the form of two large quadrangles and are inhabited exclusively by fishermen and their families, The houses are neat and commodious and might be very comfortable. only they are kept in such filthy & dirty condition, so that the inhabitants are seldom free of some kind of disease. The place is divided for distinction into the North and South Squares. and again Subdivided into Pilot's Square. and Middle Row It has of late become customary to spell the name of this village Footdee, as if it were derived from the circumstance of its lying adjacent to the embouchure or foot of the Dee; but the uniform Spelling in old writings is Futtie, or sometimes, though seldom, Fottie; and it may be observed that etymological propriety would require that if the name had reference to the foot of the Dee, it should have been either "Dee-foot" (as "Elvan-foot," "Bog-foot," etc.) or "Foot-o-dee" (as Foot-o-hill. -- etc. --- (New. Stat. Act. [Statistical Account] P. 5) Futtie ----- New. Stat, Act. [Stastistical Account] P. 5-73. --- |
