shoulder it has a diameter of 3 1/4" and across
the mouth of 6". On either side is a shield
bearing the Royal Arms of Scotland enclosed
within a circular border bearing the legend
in Gothic lettering "Jacobus dei gratia Rex Scottor:
:um". The whole measuring 2 1/8" in diameter. Around the shoulder runs an orna:
:mental band much worn, formed of fleur de
lys. Between the shield & the enclosing scroll
is a weak foliaceous device such as is to be seen
on armorial seals of the beginning of the
16th century. The handle, which terminates
in a flattened knob, has been sheathed in
copper. The tongue is of iron and is suspended
from an iron cross piece which has been clumsily
fixed by means of passing the ends through
perforations made in the top of the bell.

No.2. measures to the top of the broken grip 7". the
bell itself measuring 5 1/2" in height. Into the
stem has been inserted a wide open handle
of iron measuring 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 such as was
in former days fixed to the rod of an outside
bell. The diameter of the bell at the shoulder
is 4" and at the mouth 6 5/8". Around
the waist runs the inscription:- HAD:
:INGTOUN ANNO 1690 beneath which is a
wreath or border formed of inverted fleur-de-lis
