the Free Church the Reformed Presbyterian Church & the Parochial School , there is no Catholic Chapel but occasional meetings are held in an old building formerly a Store room to the Wind Mill situated at the S. [South] End of the Town. It has branch Banks viz : The National Bank of Scotland, The Edinburgh & Glasgow Bank & a Savings Bank also Agencies for several Fire & Life Insurance Companies a Post Office two respectable Inns with numerous Smaller Public houses, it has two Annual Fairs at Midsummer & Lammas the latter of which is nearly discontinued, Monthly Cattle Markets have been established some years except for the months of February & March there are no regular Conveyances established at present but two parties are licensed to Let Cars etc the Burgh is governed by a Provost , two Bailies & fifteen Councellors who decide trifling matters, those of weightier import (See next page) [Continued]
