[South West] of Edinburgh and about the centre of the Parish of Whithorn, it consists of a principal Street about three quarters of a mile in length & crossed near the middle by the River Kett, there are several Public Pumps & a Weighing Machine in the Street and a few very brief and unimportant Alleys diverging on the E [East] side thro' [through] one of which there is any throughfare. the Main Street is very irregular & crooked having many abrupt turns & salient Angles & great diversity of breadth having from Seven to thirty three yards, the houses are generally well built and slated but very irregular. There is no Manufactures & the trade depends upon Agriculture & the Liverpool Markets. On the West side of the Main Street stands the Town Hall or Court House from which the Established Church is Situated about 200 yards W [West] . on the E [East] side is the United Presbyterian Church (See next page) [Continued]
