immediately in the village is a small Sabbath School at its West end, The Parish Church & School are situated a short distance South on a rising ground and an endowed School a little way East on the road to Edinburgh - There is no object of interest or antiquity about the village which is chiefly inhabited by weavers miners & laborers the two latter finding employment on the adjacent farms and in Coal Pits abounding in the neighbourhood - There is an annual fair held here for the Sale of Cattle etc. on the first tuesday in May and there is also held a cattle show and gymnastic games on the Second Monday in July
