009 | [Situation] In the Northern part of the Parish of Whitburn A large village situated on the lower or Southern road between Edinburgh & Glasgow about 20 miles from the former and 22 from the latter. It forms one long street. slightly Curved at the E. [East] end and Occupies both sides of the road, the houses are one and two storeys high, thatched and slated & generally in good repair - an having vegetable gardens in rear - It contains some very good general shops with a number of small ones of various kinds, a few spirit shops and one very good Inn. The "Whitburn Inn" - There is a branch here of the City of Glasgow Bank in connection with which is a Savings Bank, a Post Office & Gas Works, the latter being the only public work in the village; The only School [continued over on page 12] |
