[South] Portion of the Ph [Parish] of Torphichen A small village or Hamlet on the Road between Edinburgh and Glasgow - 23½ Miles from the former & 18½ from the latter - It contains only 16 or 18 dwellings built at intervals On each side of the road, they are all One storey high, thatched & slated & in good Repair, generally the majority having small gardens attached - the houses are the property of the Occupiers, feud from Mr. D. Jardine, BlacKridge farm, who owns all the land on which the village stands. It Contains a small Ph. [Parish] Church, a Ph. [Parish] School & one supported by the Parishioners, two Small Shops & a Public house - it also Contains a branch Post Office, which is in a private house & has Only been established a few weeks - There is One delivery and one despatch, the former at 1 p.m. and the latter at 4 p.m. |
