Revd. [Reverend] A. Bell D.D. [Doctor of Divinity] Alexander Seton Esq of Preston |
005 | [Situation] On the Summit of Cocklerue This is the Remains of what appears to have been a very strongly defended Camp or Fort. The Remains are in tolerable preservation, and Consist of portions of two Circles at the N.W. [North West] side, where it most required such defences. On the South & West it was Inaccessable, being defended by a precipitous ledge of Rocks: within the Camp it is almost level. It is one of the Circular or Elliptical form of Camps, and, although sometimes called "Roman" in the locality, it is evidently one of the British Hill Forts. At the N.N.W. [North North West], and within the Rings of this Fort, there is a Cavity in some Rocks called "Wallace's Bed. The Fort is situation is on the summit of the Hill Called Cockleroi. |
