005 [Situation] In the SW. [South West] side of Linlithgow Ph. [Parish]
A Hill of Considerable Elevation at the south side of the Parish of Linlithgow, and on the Estate of Preston. It is of a Conical shape and Commands very extensive & splendid Views of the surrounding Country for many miles. - On its summit are the Remains of an ancient Fort or Camp, and its surface is Rough Pasture, intermixed with ledges of precipitous Rocks. - There is no decided method of writing the name. Dr. [Doctor] Bell recommends Cocklerue - to agree with the Stat. Acct. [Statistical Account] - it being the nearest approach to the sound of the pronunciation of the name "cock-le-rue"; Mr. Seton always writes it - "Cocklerois". - There are various Conflicting Traditions as to the Origin of the name, apparently Invented to Justify the several modes of spelling.
