The battle was fought between the Earls of Angus & Lennox, with their adherents for the possession of the Young King James 5. Lennox Sought to deliver him from the power of the Douglasses And for this purpose he was marching an Army of ten thousand men to enter Edinburgh, but when arriving at Linlithgow Bridge he found it So well guarded & protected by Artillery that he was forced to ford a difficult part of the River Avon about A Mile farther South and nearly Opposite the Old Priory of Manuel in Stirlingshire - the banks being high the Lennox party was thrown into Confusion Which was the ultimate Cause of
