Essential website maintenance

large gas work in the town. There are several buildings in the town that are pointed out, as the Templar Tenement, the whole of which are in a gothic style of architecture. "It is a place of great antiquity. - Its earliest existing charter as a Royal Burgh, is dated in the reign of Robert II; but, previous to that period, it undoubtedly enjoyed that rank, since, in the parliament of David II, held at Perth in 1348 it was statute and ordained,
that so long as the Burgh of Berwick, and Roxburgh are detained and holden by English men, the Burghs of Lanark, and Lithgow, shall be received and admitted in there place, as constituent members of the court of the four burghs". The town is governed by a council, consisting of 15 members -- Provost, three Bailies, Dean of Guild, and Treasurer included. there is also a sheriff court held here. There is a Post Office, a banch of the Commercial Bank of Scotland, and a branch of the Western Bank. of Scotland. The Edinh. [Edinburgh] and Glasgow Railway passes along the south side of the town, and the Union Canal runs parallel to it and on its south. A coach goes between the Railway Station and Bo'ness twice a day. The whole of the town is fued, and the town council are the principal
superiors. The societies are the Masons, Dyers, and Crispins. There is 27 public houses, and the other necessary shops.
