Bathgate Castle
Mr. J. Johnston Banker
Mr. A. Simpson Late Provost
Mr. R. McNab Reids Place
009 [Situation] About ¾ mile SSE [South South East] of the Ph. [Parish] Church.
The site of this ancient Castle is situated in low ground S.E. [South East] of the Town of Bathgate & is indicated by a considerable swell of the ground approaching to an oblong form & on the E. [East] side the trenches that formed the moat & what appears to have been the entrance, & probably a drawbridge are still traceable. Mr Johnston has seen the stones turned up by the plough and carried off for the purpose of building. Kitchen utensils of brass have also been found. In this [Castle the] family of Stewart has its origin & Walter Stewart who espoused the daughter of Robert the Bruce, died here in 1328. The object marked D W. [West] of the Castle is supposed by Mr. Johnston to have been where the Mews stood & that an Old Hall probably stood where houses called Hall Bathgate (Hall of Bathgate) now stand & that the Causeway led to this Hall whilst Mr. McNab supposes the Old Hall stood at the object D and on referring to the estate map 1824 I find this object is called "Oldhall Knowe" & the field is called "Oldhall Bog"* and the same plan where the Castle stood, it is called "Old Castle Meadow"* but there is no certain information respecting this object to the obtained.
