This street, the N. [North] end of which is very narrow extends from the E. [East] end of Main Street, Southward to the E. [East] end of North Bridge Street - the houses are chiefly one story high and thatched, with gardens in rear, and occupied by weavers and laborers. Mr Johnston, Banker, and Mr Simpson exProvost, say, this street derived its name from its having led to the Mews belonging to Bathgate Castle which stood in low marshy ground S.E. [South East] of the town.
