Spittal's Hospital [Continued] question is quite a different building and is Situated in Spittal Street, and has the following inscription on a Slab over the door. "This hous is foundit for Support of the Puir be Robert Spttal, Taillyour to King James the 4th in Anno 1530. It was intended for decayed members of the incorporated trades of the Burgh And their Widows, but as Scarcely any person could be found to Accept the benefit on Condition of living in the house the building was Sold by the trustees to a private individual, And of Course it is now used for its Original Purposes. The yearly revenue arising from the lands at the present time is About £800 which is distributed in weekly pensions to 53 Males and 47 Widows, the former receiving from 2/- [£0.2.0] to 2/6 [£0.2.6] each and the latter 1/6 [£0.1.6] each P [Per] week. The Magistrates and Town Council are the trustees and patrons.
