017 Over this gate is a very powerful Six Gun Battery of large Caliber, three guns pointing towards the South and three towards the East, the two Sides of the battery forming a Right Angle.This is called from its Situation the "Overport Battery".

017 A little further on in a North-easterly direction is Situated the "French or Spur Battery" So called it is Said from a French Engineer being employed at the Construction of it. It is composed of three Sides, and mounts Eight Guns, at the extreme North West end of this battery, are some small Portholes for Musketry.

017 The Inner Ditch is likewise defended by a Rampart of immense Strength and thickness. At the South end of this rampart is Situated "Queen Anne's Battery". This is a Casement battery and mount Three Guns.
In passing through the third Gate, or first gate of departure, you enter the Lower Square and come into view of the East side of the Castle.
