010.15 ; 017.03 | A Fortress of great Antiquity, though no Certain Account can be given of its first erection. It us Said that the Romans had a Station here and that they raised fortifications on the Precipitous Rock on which the Castle Stands. It is approached by the Castle Wynd, between the latter and the Castle is a large and Well laid out Esplanade which is enclosed by a Substantial Stone Wall, and is used by the Garrison as a Parade ground. In Approaching the Castle you enter over a Draw Bridge which spans the Outer Ditch, the latter Surrounds that Side next to the esplanade. This Side of the Castle is defended by a Rampart of immense strength and thickness, at the South end of the Ditch is a Sally port which is pierced for Musketry and commands the whole ditch. On the inside of the first gate is a Substantial building which is named the "Barrier Guard Room", Adjacent to which are the Officers Stables, Straw Stone, etc. A little further on and turning northward is the Second gate, on entering this you pass over a Small Stone Bridge which spans the inner Ditch. |
