SPROUSTON [parish] | Sprouston (Parish) | continued | [continued from page 1] Sprouston was a Rectory held by Kelso Abbey in a charter dated 1128. There were two chapels in the parish independently of the parish church one at Hadden where the Abbot of Kelso granted to Bernard de Howden the right to build a private chapel, where "he and his guests might hear divine service all the days of the year except on Christmas Day, Easter day and the feast of St Michael" when they were obliged to attend the parish church. This chapel nor the site of it cannot now be discovered. The Barony of Lempitlaw, which forms the southern division of the parish, was originally a separate parish, but was, at a time which has not been ascertained united to Sprouston.
