The name is stated to be derived from British, Celtic and Saxon. That perhaps most generally ascribed is from British Mintaw, the brink or edge which extends out - referring either to the situation of the original village of Minto or to the position of the mansion-house where an angular point is formed by the junction of two streams.
The orthography appearing in old Charters is Myntow Mintov and Mynthow. The Parish of Minto is bounded on the North by those of Lilliesleaf and Ancrum on the East by Cavers, on the South by Cavers and Wilton and on the West by Wilton. No part of it is detached nor is there within its limits a detached portion of another Parish. Its form is nearly an oblong - contracting at the west and tapering to a near point at the East.
