This Parish formerly contained several Towers or border Peels which for the most part have now disappeared. One called Fatlips Castle figures in Grose's views in Scotland. It is supposed to have been a stronghold belonging to Turnbull of Barnhills whose place of outlook is on a projecting rock immediately underneath. Monks Tower - the site of which has been shewn - was originally a cell belonging to the Monks of Melrose which probably was erected about 1192 when Jocelyn Bishop of Glasgow presented to the Abbey the church lands and tithes of Hassendean.
