008.10 | "Is Situated upon a rising ground, about 1/4 of mile west from the Abbey, and commands a very picturesque view; the foundation Stone was laid upon the 21st. of Mach 1808 by James Pringle Esqr Torwoodlee - William Riddel Esqr. Linthill etc etc And was Consecrited by prayer by the then parish minister the late Revd. [Reverend] Mr Thompson - The building was Completed in Sept. [September] 1810 And Cost about £4000. It has a Neat Small Spire, about one hundred feet in height, And the interior being executed in a very Neat Style, it may be Considered one of the handsomest in the South of Scotland. It is encircled by a wall, having a light, Cast-Metal raling upon it (for about two thirds of the distance,) And has a principal South gate. And two Smaller ones, one east, And the other west, It contains about 1500 people, And Measures in the inside sixty-four feet in length, & 48 feet in breadth.
