008.01 This Abbey was founded by King David I. in 1136, opened, And dedicated to St. Mary, in July 1146, And was the best endowed one in his Kingdom; but of this erection little remains, it having been destroyed by Edward II, in 1322, for which, And Several other Acts, Robert Bruce Severely punished him; in the year 1326, he had to rebuild in a magnificient Style of Gothic Architecture. - It was repaired the last time in the reign of James IV, And the Style then used was termed the perpendicular, So that it may be Said the building was of the very neat Gothic Architecture, when Slender pillars, And sharply pointed arches were introduced and the perpendicular which collectively display the most elaborate Specimen. of ancient Architecture in Scotland. The decorated work of this Abbey, as well the whole Mason worK, had been admirably executed; the mouldings are Still so Sharp, that, they Seem as if lately from the chisel of the mason, And the decorated worK yet displays the most refined taste -
