007.04 | An irregularly built village, about 3/4ths of a mile west of Melrose, near the River Tweed, and upon the Edinburgh road, The dwellings - ranging from one to two stories in height, are - excepting a few modern cottages - mostly old and inconveniently built; the inhabitants, numbering upwards of 200, follow the usual country Vocations, Tailors, Shoemakers, Smiths, Joiners and agricultural labourers; it contains a private School, having an average daily attendance of about 50 pupils, also several small Tea & Tobacco dealers; it supports but one public house, and a Grocer's Shop - where, the post office is kept. In the centre of the Village there are remains of two fortalices, Erected in the 16th Century by the families of 'Hirton and Fisher' - |
