009.04 A large horse shoe let into a stone in Roxburgh Street, in the middle of the Roadway and not far from Cuinzie Neuk. The Shoe is mentioned in Property deeds. According to tradition it marks the spot where King James the second's horse lost one of it's shoes in 1460 when the King was on his way to attack Roxburgh Castle. He is said to have been killed by the bursting of a cannon, and the present duke of Roxburgh has planted a holly tree to mark the spot.
The story of the shoe may possibly be true, but a Kings horse is generally well shod. "The horse shoe 1460" may be written in German text.
