009.04 | An Ancient cross stood here in the garden that was made in the last century by a duke of Roxburgh. The Houses at the Townhead were pulled down and the road diverted to give space for the garden. The cross stood in the middle or side of the street. The weekly markets used to be held at this end of the Town, the original Kelso. The cross was shifted from the garden into the middle of the street, put opposite the little lane leading down to Lady Bennet's well, and about 45 years ago (1812) it was broken to pieces by Mr Lambs father and built into the corner house on the left hand going down to the Dukes old garden above mentioned. To be written in German text. |
