the Kelso chronicle which originated in 1832, are published, the former twice a week, the latter once. Kelso has the honor of being the Birth-place of the Ballantyne press, and the first of Sir Walter Scotts works were printed here. There are extensive Gas Works, from which the town is pretty well lighted, it is also well supplied with water but the drainage of the town is very imperfect. Kelso is the Market-town of the district - has a weekly corn market, and a monthly cattle & Sheep market - in some parts of the year the cattle market is held fortnightly.
