Parish of Bedrule County of Roxburgh

the east side of Parish the greatest elevation in the Parish which is upwards of 1000 feet above sea level
a line of low lying hills stretches across the Parish. The principal streams are Rule Water on the Wn [Western] boundary
and Ruecastle Burn in the central district both tributaries of River Teviot. Two branches of Turnpike
Road from Castleton to Jedburgh enter the Southern District and after a junction the road pursues for about one mile
a NE [North Eastern] direction. Limestone and coal exist but as yet have not been successfully worked. No manufactory is carried on.
There are two villages or hamlets both of which consist of a farm-house and a few cottages - named respectively Bedrule
and Newton. There is a Parish School in Bedrule Village also a parochial church a little to the South thereof
Patron Hume of Ninewells. Sir William Francis Elliot of Stobs is Chief Proprietor. Population at the last
census 240.

Distinct vestiges of an encampment may be traced in En [Eastern] district which are identical in
features with similar objects hitherto characterized as British Forts. The Sites and remains of several border
strongholds have been shewn, of which structures there is nothing particularly interesting either in history or their construction.
They belonged principally to the Turnbulls a family noted for their predatory habits in feudal times. At
Rue Castle - the site of which is shewn, it is traditionally reported that the Courts of Justice were held previously
to removal to Jedburgh.
