098 [Situation] At the eastern end of Blackfriars Wynd and on its north side.
An old house in a dilapidated condition two Storeys high at present used by the proprietor Mr. Bell as a Cabinetmakers workshop. It belonged formerly to the Corporation of Glovers and the upper storey or apartment was used as their hall of meeting. It is rendered an object of some interest Since Sir Walter Scott wrote his novel of the Fair Maid of Perth as he assigned to it the residence of Simon Glover the father of the Fair Maid. There are some remains of old walls or portion of a ruin with gothic arches which have much of the appearance of being a portion of some ecclesiastical building which many consider to be the Southern side of the Black Friars Monastery, and in a small courtyard
