This wall or fortification was raised by General D'esse in the years 1559 and 1560, previous, to the siege, by the Lords, of the congregation, and the English Army, under Earl Grey, The wall consisted of a large bank, made of boulders, covered with earth, outside of which, was a deep ditch, filled with water, Campbell in his history of Leith says. "that the Walls of Leith were both of great height and strenght is, we thinK made sufficiently evident, by the circumstance of the siege in 1560, as well as, from the various unsuccessful attempts, which were made on other occasions, to carry the town by storm, The rampart or wall was of an octangonal form with eight [continued on page 28] |
