This wall or fortification was raised by General D'esse in the years 1559 and 1560, previous, to the siege, by the Lords, of the congregation, and the English Army, under Earl Grey, The wall consisted of a large bank, made of boulders, covered with earth, outside of which, was a deep ditch, filled with water, Campbell in his history of Leith says.
