015 | Very extensive Limeworks on the Farm of W [West] Handaxwood. The Stone is obtained partly by open-cast or Quarrying from the Surface; but wherever the ground is of a nature to admit mining is resorted to the Stone being obtained by this process with more expedition & economy The Shafts or Galleries are driven nearly horizontal and some of the penetrate about 300 yards. The water runs off by a natural fall; and, the Stone is carried from the Quarry to the Kiln (about 1/2 a mile) by a Railway on an inclined plane. These works are the largest and produce the best Lime of any works for many miles round, they are occupied by Robert Gray |
