012 A range of high hills, or mountains running from the locality where the 3 Counties of Lanark, Peebles and Edinburgh approximate and stretching away in a north easterly direction terminates in the parish of Lasswade. Their elevation averages 16 or 1700 feet above the level of the sea and their appearance is at once lofty and picturesque. The River North Esk and Water of Leith have their sources amongst them together with many rivulets of less note. "Carnathy" is the loftiest hill of the range and is connected, as is the entire chain, with Scottish literature, both historical and romantic. -
