007 A large modern built edifice which evinces good taste and judgement in its style of architecture and interior arrangements. it is surrounded by about 30 or 40 acres of ornamental ground with a large and finely wooded demesne. it was visited in 1822 by King George 4th, and within the hall a brass plate in the form of a shoe marks the spot on which his Majesty set foot; in the library which is valuable and extensive are several Manuscripts (formerly belonging to the Abbey) of great antiquity written in folio upon Vellum and adorned with pictures emblematic of the subjects of which they treat. The present building is erected upon the spot which was formerly occupied by a Monastery founded and endowed by King David 1st in 1140 any remains of which are entirely concealed by the present building. north west of the Abbey in a small wood is the family burial vault and to which there is said to be a subterranean
