This river is the continuation of the Rivers North & South Esk from their junction near Dalkeith Palace, it flows past the town of "Musselburgh", dividing it from "Fisherrow" where it empties itself into the Firth of Forth - in Musselburgh it is crossed by two stone bridges, one of them of very remote origin & supposed to have been erected by the Romans when in occupation of this country, it is also spanned by a long & very narrow foot bridge of wood, supported by 6 pairs of metal [posts] which are inserted in the bed of the River at equal distances.
