Parish of St. Cuthberts

There is no historical record or tradition as to the date of the building of Merchiston Castle
Maitland in his history of Edinburgh remarks that the date 1376 was inscribed on the Old mansion
house of Wrights houses but says that Merchiston must be much older. In Groves Antiquities
it is remarked to have been attacked and taken in 1572 and in 1573 it is used as a prison by the
English general for prisoners of war.
