A large building of the Gothic style with garden & ornamental ground attached. This hospital was founded by James Gillespie of Spylaw who by deed dated 1796 bequeathed a considerable part of his ample fortune to the endowment of an hospital for Old men & women and a free school for the instruction of 100 boys. The building of this hospital was commenced in 1800. The gross annual revenue is about £1500 The institution when full contains 50 inmates at present there are only 45 admitted The inmates at their admission must have attained the age of 55. The school is at the north end of Bruntsfiels Place.
