[Situation] S. [South] side of Infirmary St This institution consists of several buildings some large additions to are just now nearly completed & others in progress. The old part or principal building consists of a large plain building with wings. The wings are of very plain architecture but the centre is rather [floredly] ornamented & is 210 feet long & 3 stories high with a dome in the centre as high as the second storey in the centre of the front is a richly sculptured niche in which is placed a statue of George II in Roman dress. In the entrance hall is a well finished bust of Provost Drummond to commemorate his efforts in behalf of founding the institution. A large staircase leads from this hall to the different wards the number of beds in these wards amounts to 400. The additions of the infirmary to this building is now considerable the buildings of the High School which stood in Surgeons Square is now the surgical hospital & contain wards for surgical patients & an operating theatre in this square are also a fever hospital & lock hospital the whole capable of accommodating 700 patients & when the buildings now in progress of completion will be fitted up it is calculated that there will be accommodation for upwards of 900 patients. This [institution] was first opened in 1729. The present building was commenced in 1738. It is supported by bequests & other donations [bequeathed] or granted from time to time but more immediately by public collections & subscriptions & also students fees. The affairs [are managed] by 12 ordinary managers who appoint the several offices. The whole subject to the revision of a committee of the contributors. |
