[Situation] About 16 chains W by N [West by North] of the Water of Leith.
A large building 3 Stories high with handsome portico in front supported by eight mossy columns. At the entrance to the precincts is a handsome gateway and porter's lodge about 20 acres of land is attached occupied as gardens, pleasure grounds &c. The founder of this institution Mr. John Watson a Writer in Edinburgh who in 1759 left a reversion of his fortune about £5000 for the erection of a foundling hospital in Edinburgh the money was let at interest untill it accumulated to the sum of £100.000 but the utility of a foundling hospital was question and an act of parliament was obtained for altering the design of the donor; accordingly in 1825 the present building was commissioned and fitted up for the maintenance and education of destitute children. It can accomodate about 120, the number of inmates at present is 95 is a good course of English besides Latin, Greek and French is taught to such whose intended profession requires it also Drawing &c is taught.
