A large building three stories high with handsome Grecian portico in front supported by 8 mossy columns. At the entrance to the precincts is a handsome gate and porters lodge there are about 20 acres of land attached occupied as gardens pleasure grounds &c. The founder of this Institution was Mr. John Watson, Writer, in Edinburgh who in 1759 left a reversion of his fortune about £5000 for the erection of a foundling hospital in Edinburgh. The money was let at Interest until it accumulated to the sum of £100.000 but the utility of a foundling hospital was questioned and an act of parliament was obtained for altering the design accordingly in 1825 the present building was commenced for the maintainence and education of destitute children, it can accommodate about 120 the number at present is 95. The education a good course of English education besides Latin Greek and French, Drawing &c. |
