A rounded and partly [---] eminence rising abruptly [from] the eastern termination of the Ridge on which Princes [and] Georges streets are built and [rising] On its southwestern side the [Continuation] of the valley by which the ridge of the High St. is separated from that of the new town. Between it and the Princes [St] Ridge a deep and narrow hollow is formed which winds eastward round the base of the hill and is lost [---] the plain that extends to Leith. From the summit it slopes [gently] towards the southeast, to the N. [North] west it exhibits an abrupt rounded face. Its great mass is Composed of Claystone - porphyry and trap-tufa On it stands Nelson's Monument A most Conspicuous object. also the Royal Observatory, the monuments erected to the Memory of Dugald Stewart Professor Playfair, it is also intersected with roads And walks [---] Well lighted up with gas. From the summit of this hill is a most magnificent extensive and picturesque view of the City, the Castle, Leith, Frith of Forth [---]Shire, Haddingtonshire &c.
