002 | This name applies to an excellent and well constructed pier running into the sea for the distance of 1500 ft [feet] by 17 in breadth, it was commenced in 1835 and finished in 1845 by the Duke of Buccleuch at the coast of £140,000 by request of the Steamboat proprietors - it is well furnished with sheds or warehouses, a lighthouse etc and the harbour [harbour] well protected on the west by a well constructed breakwater which is almost finished. The stone was brought from Granton Quarry about 1 mile west, by means of a Railway. On the pier is a Railway station in Connection with the Edinburgh and Northern Line which is a neat Brick building; from this station, see above * * railway trains are conveyed across the Firth of Forth by a powerful steam boat. I may here remark that the pier together with the village is well lit with gas, from the Leith Company |
