039.02 | This is the highest in the range of the Tinto Hills, and from which the entire range derives its name. The name is a derivative from a Gaelic word signifying fire and would imply that from its most commanding and extensive view over a large tract of level country, its summit was used in feudal times as a place for beacons or signals: it is about 2400 feet above the level of the sea - the part situated in Wiston ph [Parish] presents a peculiar appearance from the number of landslips down its weather beaten sides. |
