024.08 | An interesting ruin made famous in Old Mortality. The principal building is a plain quadrangle, unroofed; a winding staircase and several apartments still partially traceable, but generally in an advanced state of decay. It also contains some subterranean chambers in perfect preservation, in the centre of one of which is a deep well. The principal entrance is surmounted by the arms of the Hamilton family. A contiguous building, to the east, is in better preservation. The ground apartment probably the kitchen, being still roofed. The outer wall is high and broad, in good preservation, is flanked with towers and incloses several buildings which have been repaired, and are now used as the offices of a farmsteading. It was erected in its present form in 1232. It is situated on a conspicuous eminence, covered with old trees. From the summit of the building is obtained a remarkable view of the high rugged cliffs which stretch away towards the Clyde on the north bank of the river Nethan. It is now the property of the Douglas family. |
