It was long a place of rude
antique appearance but
since about the year 1842
many of the houses have
been rebuilt in a somewhat
handsome fashion - Many
of the shops in the principal
Street have a tasteful and
rich appearance. the town is
lighted with gas prepared at
a work erected in 1832 at a
place called Steels Cross in
the Western outskirts. It is also
well supplied with water. and
altogether it is a pleasant quite
healthful rural town and attracts
many tourists from its proximity
to the falls of Clyde. X X X X X

is handloom weaving - Weekly markets are held on Tuesday
and Saturday and there are 7 annual fairs XX Lanark
unites with Airdrie Hamilton Falkirk
and Linlithgow in returning a member
to Parliament - Municipal Constituency
